The 39 Steps
An innocent man, a secret spy ring, and a chase across Scotland. Alfred Hitchcock turns a chance encounter into a classic race to clear one man’s name.
A chance encounter draws Richard Hannay into a dangerous spy conspiracy. When he becomes a murder suspect, Hannay flees London for Scotland, pursued by the police and the very people he’s trying to expose. To clear his name, he must uncover the secret behind “the 39 steps.”
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, this lively early thriller has everything that made him the Master of Suspense: an innocent person on the run, a mystery that grows with every clue, sharp humour, and danger around every corner. Robert Donat stars alongside Madeleine Carroll in a Hitchcock classic that still makes for a thrilling watch.
